FEMA Has Begun Sending Advance Payments to NFIP Policyholders Impacted by Hurricane Ian

If you’re a National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policyholder and were affected by Hurricane Ian, you may soon receive an advance payment from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) if you already initiated the claims process. On October 6, 2022, FEMA announced that it had already sent out $3.5 million in advance payments to claimants to help them get a jumpstart on their repairs (1).

About a week after the major storm struck down in Florida and the Carolinas, Axios cited Hurricane Ian may have caused a total of “$74 billion in insured losses, with a best estimate of $67 billion.” (2) Clearly, the advance payments are much needed by those impacted by the storm.

Some NFIP policyholders may be able to reinstate their flood damage coverage even if their renewal date has passed.

In addition to announcing the advance payments, FEMA also announced that if the renewal date on your flood insurance policy has passed in Florida, you may still be entitled to receive coverage for damage. FEMA is offering policyholders whose renewal dates fall between August 25, 2022, through October 23, 2022, a 90-day-grade period to renew their policies.

How much will NFIP policyholders receive in advance payments?

According to FEMA, if you have an NFIP policy and you’re able to provide documentation of the damage, you may be entitled to an advance payment between $5,000 and $20,000. The good news is that policyholders don’t need to have an inspection done by an adjuster to receive the upfront payment.

So, if you’re an NFIP policyholder and have proof that your home has sustained flood damage from Hurricane Ian, you can contact your insurance provider regarding the payment if you haven’t already received it.
